India Gate

Located in the center of New Delhi, the massive archway—visible for some distance in all directions—memorializes the nation’s participation in both World Wars as well as those lost in wars since India’s independence in 1947. The archway itself is perfectly lined up geometrically with the president’s official home, the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The circular monument to those who gave their lives in defense of India includes relief scenes of the various conflicts in which they fought and died. It is a moving and memorable, if suitably sobering, destination.
